Search Fields

You can search UKOP Online by the following fields:

• All Record Keyword
• Issuing Body
• Title
• Subject
• Category
• Series Reference
• Session Year
• Publication Date
• Personal Author
• Publisher
• ISBN/ISSN

All Record Keyword

From the Search page, you can use the All Record Keyword field to search for any word or phrase contained within an entry in UKOP Online. To enter terms into the search box:

• browse a list of keywords from which you can select terms to transfer back to the search box;

  or

• type your search terms directly into the Keyword search box. Search terms may consist of either single words or phrases.

For example:

When searching in the Keyword field, you can use truncation to retrieve records containing variations on a term. If you choose to search for more than one term, you can also combine them using Boolean and proximity searching.

Issuing Body

From the Search page, you can use the Issuing Body field to search for any word or phrase contained in the issuing body of an entry. To enter items into the search box:

• browse a list of issuing bodies from which you can select terms to transfer back to the search box. Each body and subsidiary body is indexed as a separate entry in the Issuing Body browse list;

  or

• type your search terms directly into the Issuing Body search box. Search terms may consist of either single words or phrases.

For example:

When searching in the Issuing Body field, you can use truncation to retrieve records containing variations on a term. If you choose to search for more than one term, you can also combine them using Boolean and proximity searching.

Title

From the Search page, you can limit a search to a particular title. To enter terms in the Title search box:

• browse a list of publication titles from which you can select items to transfer back to the search box;

  or

• type your title keywords directly into the Title search box.

For example:

When searching in the Title field, you can use truncation to retrieve entries for publications with common or similar names. If you choose to search for more than one title, you can also combine them using Boolean searching.

Subject

From the Search page, you can search for subject index terms for all publications listed in UKOP Online. To enter terms in the Subject search box:

• browse a list of subjects from which you can select items to transfer back to the search box.

  or

• type your Subject keyword(s) directly into the Subject search box.

For example:

When searching in the Subject field, you can use truncation to retrieve entries for publications of common or similar subjects. If you choose to search for more than one subject, you can also combine them using Boolean searching.

Category

From the Search page, you can use the Category search field to restrict your search to various UKOP Online To enter terms in the Category search box:

• browse a list of categories from which you can select items to transfer back to the search box.

  or

• type your category keyword(s) directly into the Category search box.

For example:

If you choose to search for more than one category, you can also combine them using Boolean searching.

Series Reference

From the Search page, you can search for Series Reference terms for all relevant publications listed in UKOP Online. To enter terms in the Series search box:

• browse a list of series reference details from which you can select items to transfer back to the search box.

  or

• type your Series Reference keyword(s) directly into the Series Reference search box.

For example:

When searching in the Series Reference field, you can use truncation to retrieve entries for publications with common or similar Series Reference details. If you choose to search for more than one Series Reference term, you can also combine them using Boolean searching.

Session Year

From the Search page, you can search for Parliamentary publications published during a specific Parliamentray session. To enter terms in the Session Year search box:

• browse a list of Session Years from which you can select items to transfer back to the search box.

  or

• type your Session Year(s) directly into the Session Year search box.

For example:

If you choose to search for more than one Session Year, you can also combine them using Boolean searching.

Publication Date

Use the Publication Date field to limit a search to documents published during a specific year or a range of years. The default values appearing in the search boxes represent the earliest and most recent years covered by the database.

The Publication Year field can be searched in two ways:

• To search on a range of years, enter the relevant values into the from and to search boxes.

  For example:

• To search on one particular year, enter the same value into both of the search boxes.

Personal Author

From the Search page, you can search for documents written or produced by a specific author or comittee chairman. To enter terms in the Personal Author search box:

• browse a list of inverted Personal Author names from which you can select items to transfer back to the search box.

  or

• type the inverted name directly into the Personal Author search box.

For example:

When searching in the Personal Author field, you can use truncation to search on the stem of a Personal Author name. If you choose to search for more than one Personal Author, you can also combine them using Boolean searching.

Publisher

From the Search page, you can use the Publisher field in order to locate publications by the full name of the hard copy publisher in the case of TSO/HMSO publications or publications distributed by TSO/HMSO. In addition, searching on Chadwyk-Healey will locate those publications which are available from Chadwyck-Healey on microfiche. If you wish to locate titles published directly by a government agency (non-TSO/HMSO publications), use the Issuing Body field instead. To enter terms into the Publisher field:

• browse a list of Publishers from which you can select items to transfer back to the search box.

  or

• type the Publisher name(s) directly into the Publisher search box.

For example:

When searching in the Publisher field, you can use truncation to search on the stem of a Publisher name. If you choose to search for more than one Publisher, you can also combine them using Boolean searching.

ISBN/ISSN

From the Search page, you can search for documents with a particular ISBN or ISSN. To enter terms in the ISBN/ISSN search box:

• browse a list of ISBN(s) and ISSN(s) from which you can select items to transfer back to the search box.

  or

• type the ISBN(s) or ISSN(s) directly into the ISBN/ISSN search box.

For example:

In the browse list, numbers are displayed without separating spaces and hyphens. However, UKOP Online will retrieve all relevant documents regarless of whether or not spces/hyphens are types into the ISBN/ISSN search form. If you choose to search for more than one ISBN/ISSN, you can also combine them using Boolean searching.
