Should I choose the basic or advanced search?
Basic search – If you want to find information quickly, use basic search.
Advanced search – If you want more precise control over how you search use advanced search.
(explain how you get to the advanced search page).
Both advanced search options allow you to restrict your search by date or department/issuing body and to perform fielded searches.
How do I perform a basic search?
If you are logged in, a basic search bar will always be displayed at the top of the page. Simply enter your search term(s) or phrase into the Search field and click Go. Your search results will be displayed as a list, sorted by relevance.
How do I perform an advanced search?
Provided that you are logged in you can access Advanced Search options in two ways:
- Click on the Members tab at the top of the page to display Advanced Search options;
or
- Click on the Advanced Search link which is displayed in the search bar, at the top of every page
What is the difference between flexible and Boolean searching?
Flexible searching:
- Search using related meanings;
- Search for variants of a search term;
- Search using variant spellings;
- Finds records containing any of the search terms you have entered;
- Returns more search results than using Boolean searches.
Boolean searching:
- Search by combining search terms using Boolean operators;
- Perform command line searches;
- Limits the records retrieved to those that contain all of your search terms.
The flexible search options are displayed by default when you open the Advanced Search page. To switch between the Flexible and Boolean search options click the appropriate button at the top of the Advanced Search page. You can only use one type of search at a time.
NOTE: You will get different results depending on which advanced search screen you use.
